Why does a roof-terminated dryer vent clog faster?

Gravity. The blower pushes lint up the vertical run while the dryer is running. When the cycle ends, damp lint drops back down. It collects in the 90-degree elbow at the base of the riser, usually just above the second-floor laundry closet. That elbow is the first thing we open. Kansas City has a lot of these, upstairs laundry stacked over a hall, venting straight to a roof jack.

The jack itself is the second problem. Lint cakes around the flap hinge until the damper stops closing. Then spring arrives and starlings or squirrels build in the open hood. In January, condensation refreezes and the flap seals shut. If someone installed a screened or louvered cap, it traps lint the first week and should come off, not get brushed around.

We clean from both ends where the roof allows it. Brush down from the jack, vacuum at the base. Pitch, shingle condition, ice, and wind decide whether roof access happens that day.

Roof runs want clearing every six to nine months. Watch your cycle times and whether the laundry room turns humid — you cannot see a roof flap from the yard.
