Kansas City laundry rooms often sit where the plumbing went, not where the venting should go. Prewar and postwar homes here commonly run duct through basement joist bays to a rim joist. Later remodels moved laundry upstairs. That left long concealed runs with elbows stacked near the dryer. Rerouting means picking a shorter path, not just cleaning the old one.

The first thing measured is total developed length. Every 90-degree elbow adds effective length. The elbow at the base of a vertical run packs solid first. A reroute usually trades two elbows for one and shortens the run. Smooth-wall rigid pipe replaces foil flex. Joints get foil tape or clamps, never duct tape, which lets go from heat cycling.

Termination choice matters as much as the path. Screened or louvered covers trap lint and should come off. Roof jacks and gable terminations invite nesting each spring, and condensation can freeze the flap shut in January. Side-wall discharge low on the house is usually the better outcome when the framing allows it.

Not every job should be rerouted. Sometimes the existing path is fine and the real problem is a crushed transition behind the dryer. Interior condo closets with long concealed runs are the hardest case, since the path may be fixed by the building.
